XTN Averts Problems from World’s “Worst Ever” Computer Virus

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn.– A virus that infected a half million computers worldwide within three days of its outbreak has had minor impact on XTN, the region’s largest locally owned and operated Internet service provider.

While software security company F-Secure called the MyDoom virus “the worst e-mail worm incident in virus history,” XTN servers blocked over 25,000 copies of the virus from reaching its subscriber’s computers during the first three days alone.

Within the first twenty minutes of infecting a computer, the virus can send itself to a hundred e-mail addresses stored in the computer.

While some Internet providers offer e-mail virus protection, this is not a universal practice, said Charlie Simpson, operations manager of XTN.

The company launched its XTN E-mail Filtering two years ago. It now blocks over a million e-mails each week laden with viruses and unwanted junk messages.

“Filtering can help stop MyDoom,” Simpson said. “But the virus can still sneak through unfiltered, secondary e-mail services, such as Hotmail and Yahoo, and file sharing systems on which users upload music and other information.”

He said the best rule of thumb is to exercise caution in opening e-mail attachments.
