Comcast No.2 ISP in US

Comcast, the US cable television giant, has become the number two US Internet service provider as more customers gravitate toward high-speed connections, a survey showed on Wednesday.

The survey by comScore Networks found America Online remained the market leader in the US with a 28 per cent share but that the market had become more fragmented as new players emerged in broadband via cable or other services.

AOL has been the market leader in the dial-up segment but is lagging in broadband.

Comcast, which created a stir last month with its hostile bid for the Walt Disney Company, had 19 per cent of broadband users and seven per cent of all online users. Comcast last year acquired ATT Broadband with its cable television and Internet customers.

SBC, the country's largest provider of DSL (digital subscriber lines), another high-speed service using existing phone lines, accounted for 11 per cent of consumer broadband connections and six per cent of total subscriptions.

The number three Internet service provider overall was the discount-oriented United Online, which operates the Netzero and Juno services and held six per cent of the market.
