LOW COST OR FREE INTERNET ACCESS: |
Wednesday August 18, 2004 Broadband Now More Popular than Dial-Up Internet Access"Cheaper access has been one of the biggest reasons why broadband usage has picked up so quickly over the past 12 months," Ryan told NewsFactor. "Monthly DSL packages are dropping." The same is true with cable modem access, which together with DSL has edged out dial-up connections in popularity. Good news for Web site publishers who offer rich media content. American Internet users are connecting via broadband more than by dial-up for the first time. Market data from the research firm Nielsen/NetRatings shows the balance tipped in July. In a year-over-year comparison, 38 percent of home-based Internet users accessed the Web with a broadband connection in July of 2003. Over the past 12 months, the shift has been dramatic. Last month, 51 percent of Internet users connected by broadband. Numerically, 63 million people use broadband, and 61.3 million still rely on slower dial-up technology. One other pertinent set of figures shows that the number of broadband connections in July rose 47 percent from a year ago, while dial-up connections declined a modest 13 percent. Cheaper vs. Faster "It's surprising to see 56k holding on for so long," said Net/Ratings analyst Marc Ryan. Dial-up connections reached a peak in April of 2001 and have slowly lost their luster, as far as the American public is concerned. "Recently, though, it's been a much sharper decline," Ryan told NewsFactor. "Cheaper access has been one of the biggest reasons why broadband usage has picked up so quickly over the past 12 months," Ryan said. "Monthly DSL packages are dropping. Earthlink prices its package at $29.95, though it jumps to 34.95 in the fourth month. The Qwest home package is $26.99, and SBC charges $26.95 a month for the first year.
